Reading the results

Why it matters

A run produces more than a hundred figures. This page shows where to look first, what each headline figure means in plain words, and how to find out why something is late.

The summary: four panels, in the order goods move

The run results: Inbound, Stock & picking, Labour, Dispatch

Read left to right. Each panel leads with one figure and links to its detail.

PanelLeads withThen
1 InboundTrucks unloadedDock wait, staging peak, the truck turnaround chart.
2 Stock & pickingOrders picked in fullLines per hour, face stockout, restocks, the stock ledger (Reconciled).
3 LabourLabour utilisationPallets per paid hour, utilisation by pool and shift.
4 DispatchTrucks on timeLate P90, orders on their truck, truck fill, the biggest cause of lateness.

Under each figure, ± sd is the standard deviation across the replications: how much the figure moved from one playing of the week to the next. The selector at the top right switches between Mean of all replications and any single one.

What "P90" means

Sort the trucks by how long they waited. P90 is the wait of the truck nine-tenths of the way down the list. It ignores the single worst case but captures a bad morning. Averages hide queues; P90 shows them.

Why was it late? The nine causes

Every minute a truck leaves late is blamed on exactly one cause, in the order things happen. The causes add up to the total late minutes exactly.

CausePlain words
Released lateThe order arrived after it should already have been picked.
Waiting for stockThe pick face was empty.
Waiting for a pickerNobody was free to pick it.
PickingThe picking itself took long.
PackingPacking took long.
Waiting for floorThe dispatch floor was full.
Truck not at the doorThe truck had not arrived yet.
Waiting for a doorThe truck was at the gate but every door was busy.
LoadingLoading took long.

The Dispatch panel names the biggest cause. In the demo it is Loading. The Dispatch section's Gantt chart shows every truck as a row, with its wait, loading and lateness drawn on the day.

The rest of the page

The bar under the header jumps between sections. Every section folds, and a folded section says what it holds.

SectionHolds
Flow & doorsStaging occupancy through the week with the capacity line, doors in use, truck turnaround.
DispatchThe Gantt chart, filterable by day; lateness causes; the loads table.
LabourPool hours by shift, with unpaid breaks hatched.
ProcessesEach process's busy hours and tasks.
StockStorage occupancy, stockouts, the inventory ledger, the pick faces.
Every figureAll the KPIs, grouped in ten families. Show spread gives each replication's numerator and denominator.
AssumptionsEverything the run assumed, with provenance.
WarningsOutcome warnings, and inputs that were assumed, each linked to where it is fixed.

Every figure states its rule version (for example s1-5). If the definition of a figure ever changes, the version changes, so an old report is never silently re-read under a new rule.

The header

  • Run again repeats the run with the same settings.
  • Compare opens the comparison. See Comparing two runs.
  • Play in 3D opens the playback. See Playback in 3D.
  • Download Excel gives the run workbook, including an Inputs sheet. CSV gives one row per KPI per replication.

Try it

Open the demo's Baseline run. Find the four panels' lead figures. Then open Dispatch and find the truck that was latest. Which cause took most of its lateness?
